In September 2009 an innovative idea was formed to offer an additional resource to our county and the surrounding areas. With over 10 major water ways located in our first due areas the Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad formed a dive team. The first 9 members started their first class in February of 2010.
Over the next 8 months these members were in the pool and quarries training every weekend they had available while still offering the medical expertise on the ambulance. These folks would go through PADI open water, Advanced, Rescue Diver, and the ESDRI Tech-1.
With the dedication of these 9 founding members we have made a name for ourselves going to our first dive competition in September of 2010 and winning first place.
Taking that energy we have added more members offering one of the first Tender only classes. This offers members who might not want to get wet the ability to be a part of our team.
Not only do we train to look for people, with 5 of our members taking Underwater Criminal Investigations we have assisted the Chesterfield County Police Department on recovery of stolen items, and Virginia State Police in Searches.
This fall our dive team received a truck from our organization which offers our divers the ability to have heat/AC in the back of the truck.
It also offers our team to not only dive abilities but we have dedicated one cabinet to keep our extrication equipment for those times we may need to extricate something after getting the car out of the water.
Thought about joining our dive team? Give our membership chairman a call and they can get you all the information you need.
Please remember this dive team is in addition to joining the MVRS. All dive team members are required to be an active member of the organization.
