New Building Will Join Chesterfield County Fire and EMS and Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squads

Chesterfield County will dedicate the new addition to the Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad building, located at 3500 Courthouse Road, on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 9 a.m. The new addition to the building is a unique and positive partnership between the Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad and Chesterfield County’s Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services, enabling the two organizations to have adequate work and living space so that they can operate from the same facility.

It is with sadness that Chesterfield Fire and EMS reports to the department that Volunteer Firefighter Chris Davidson (Company 13 - Phillips) and a female passenger were killed in a motorcycle accident on the night of August 18, 2011.

He was off-duty and was traveling southbound on Interstate 95 in the City of Richmond when his motorcycle struck a disabled vehicle. Chris was 31 years old and had been a member of Company 13 for over 15 years; his father, Roy Davidson, is a 23 year veteran of Company 13. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Davidson family in their loss.

On July 12, 2011 the Old Dominion Emergency Medical Service Alliance (ODEMSA) was pleased to announce that Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad was the proud precipitant of the 2011 Regional Award of Outstanding EMS Agency. MVRS was recognized, along with our friends and family, at the ODEMSA Awards Banquet on July 29, 2011 where they were presented the award. ODEMSA describes the recipient of this award as "An EMS agency that exemplifies outstanding professionalism and service to its community; whose high level of patient care is evident by innovative training, community awareness, preventive health programs, public relations efforts and participation in local, regional and statewide EMS systems." Manchester will also be recognized at the Annual Virginia EMS Symposium as they are placed in the running for Governor’s EMS Award for 2011 State Award of Outstanding EMS Agency.

Manchester would like thanks the dedication that its volunteers put towards the organization to accomplish this award. Between the 60 active riding members they logged 30,650 hours and ran 1,568 calls for service in the year of 2010. Other accomplishments that allowed MVRS to stand out beyond other organizations were:

A total re-write of our field-training program to include new member training, BLS Attendant in Charge, ALS Attendant in Charge, and Drivers. Bi-Monthly squad dinners to encompass our current riding members (Senior and Junior), non-riding life members, and our Financial Assistance Committee (Auxiliary) as well as their family members. After aggressive training and performing in both the private and public safety sector a new Scuba Rescue Team specialized in underwater search and recovery was created to assist other Fire and EMS agencies along with Police agencies with criminal investigations and evidence recovery. An aggressive training program was implemented in 2010 with leadership training every month. This training continues into 2011 with the requirement that all elected and appointed leaders attend this training.

Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad would like to congratulate all of the 2011 Regional Award precipitants in the ODEMSA Region and look forward to the Governor’s Award presentation at the 32nd Annual VA EMS Symposium in Norfolk, VA in November.
